In this American Life’s Umbrellas Up, listeners catch a glimpse of what life is like in Hong Kong amidst all the protests. We hear from the viewpoints of multiple people: their stories of how they each were pushed to choose a side and how their lives have changed because of it. Ultimately, the protests have persuaded many into performing acts they normally wouldn’t have before.

For this project, I was tasked to create a mock storyboard concept for the episode’s television broadcasted teaser/promo. Through my illustrated sequence, I wanted to utilize this concept of unexpected change to misdirect the audience. We begin with a quiet scene in warm tones of a girl seemingly getting ready for school then, with a wipe of a police car, it’s revealed that the same girl is actually attending a protest.
